PlayStation 5 Pro Review: Is Sony's Most Powerful Console Worth the Upgrade?

Introduction

This is the PlayStation 5 Pro, an upgrade to Sony’s flagship console that enables higher graphical fidelity and improved ray tracing at much higher and smoother frame rates.

It’s the most powerful gaming console on the market, but it’s also the most expensive. I’m going to break down everything new and exciting here and tell you if it’s worth buying or upgrading to.

PlayStation 5 Evolution

Original PlayStation 5

The original PlayStation 5 launched in November of 2020, kicking off the current generation of gaming consoles.

PlayStation 5 Slim

Two years later, the PS5 Slim model was introduced. While performance didn’t change, Sony slightly increased storage and introduced an external attachable disc drive.

PlayStation 5 Pro

Now, a year later, we see the first real step forward in the console gaming space with the PlayStation 5 Pro, an upgraded console in power and performance.

Design

Inspired by the PS5 Slim

The PS5 Pro takes many design cues from last year’s Slim model.

  • Panel Design: It features the same four-panel design, but the panels are slightly different in size.
  • Customization: Previous color panels won’t fit on the new model.

External Disc Drive

  • Uses the same external disc drive as the PS5 Slim.
  • Unlike previous PS5 models, the Pro only has a digital-only version.
  • If you want disc-reading functionality, you’ll need to purchase the $80 external drive.

Size and Build

  • The PS5 Pro is slightly larger, sitting between the original and Slim models.
  • Features racing-strip-like fins on the side for air ventilation.

Ports and Positioning

  • Two USB-C ports on the front and two standard USB ports on the back.
  • Can be positioned horizontally or vertically.

Additional Features

  • Comes with two plastic feet for horizontal positioning.
  • A $30 stand is required for vertical positioning.
  • Storage has doubled to 2TB, and the console supports Wi-Fi 6.

Key Features

Upgraded GPU

  • Includes 30% more compute units and 20% faster memory compared to the standard PS5.
  • Enables rendering 50% faster.

Advanced Ray Tracing

  • Allows for more dynamic reflections and realistic lighting.
  • Can cast rays at double or triple the speed of the standard PS5.

AI Upscaling

  • Introduces “PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution,” a machine-learning-based technology that improves image clarity.

Games

Graphics Options

On the standard PS5, players had two graphics modes:

  1. Performance Mode:
    • Lower resolution (~1080p).
    • Targeted 60fps for smoother gameplay.
  1. Resolution Mode (Fidelity):
    • Higher resolution (~4K).
    • Capped at 30fps.

Enhanced Performance on the PS5 Pro

The PS5 Pro’s increased power allows games to:

  • Target 4K resolution at 60fps without compromises.
  • In some cases, push even further with 8K resolution at 120fps.

Performance Testing

Horizon Zero Dawn Remastered

  • Improved resolution in environments and textures.
  • Denser foliage compared to the standard PS5.
  • Smoother gameplay in Pro Performance Mode, with minimal trade-offs in graphical detail.

Spider-Man

  • Higher density of NPC shadows in Fidelity Mode compared to Performance Mode.
  • Increased traffic and NPC population on the Pro.
  • Web-swinging benefits significantly from higher frame rates.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart

  • Pro Performance Mode targets 60fps while maintaining high resolution.
  • Fidelity Mode adds advanced ray tracing at 30fps.
  • Notable improvements in artifact cleanup, texture density, and distant object focus.

EA Sports FC

  • Enhanced racetrack textures, especially in Quality Mode.
  • More detailed background elements and sharper visuals overall.

Enhanced PS4 Games

Backward Compatibility

The PS5 Pro includes a feature to enhance image quality for PS4 games:

  • Found in the “Screen and Video” settings.
  • Provides a system-wide image quality boost for certain games.

Example: Spider-Man

  • The enhanced visuals give older titles a polished and updated look, akin to remastering.

Price and Final Thoughts

Cost Breakdown

  • The PlayStation 5 Pro retails for $550.
  • Additional costs:
    • $80 for the external disc drive.
    • $30 for the vertical stand.

Value Proposition

The PS5 Pro is the most expensive console yet, but it delivers impressive power and performance upgrades.

Should You Buy the PS5 Pro?

Factors to Consider

  1. Do You Already Own a PS5?
    • The standard PS5 (digital) retails for $450.
    • Upgrading to 2TB storage costs ~$100.
    • Consider whether the graphical improvements justify the $100 price difference.
  1. Black Friday Deals:
    • The standard PS5 is likely to see discounts.
    • The PS5 Pro may not be discounted.

Who Should Buy It?

  • First-Time PS5 Buyers:
    • The Pro is worth it for future-proofing over the next decade.
  • Current PS5 Owners:
    • Not a must-buy unless you find a good trade-in deal.

Final Recommendation

The PS5 Pro guarantees smooth gaming for years to come, even if a PS6 launches in 4-5 years.

Bottom Line

  • The base PS5 performs surprisingly well in many cases.
  • For first-time buyers, the Pro is an excellent investment.

What do you think? Are you happy with your base PlayStation 5, or does the Pro seem like a worthwhile upgrade? Let me know in the comments!
